First Facebook, now Twitter!?!? Don't get me started on this yet again........

Twitter is a “micro-blogging” site that allows you communicate with people in 140 characters or less. Twitter posts (or “tweets”) sent by people you choose to follow (friends, celebrities, or even strangers) are automatically added to a list of tweets called your “feed. “

What do I think of Twitter
Okay you got me started again.....

What is with this new technology of tweeting and Facebook?

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm all about emailing and texting, but tweeting general comments, blurbs, thoughts to everyone (people you don't even know!!) just doesn't make sense to me.

I guess I am a little bit biased...I'm always stretched for time and never have the opportunity to actually find this fun or keep connected to the world. But I am a very big texter....so maybe one day I will start tweeting you!

What is a Library Thing?

When I first read the title of this assignment I laughed because I thought someone made it up!!!

I mean, what is a "Library Thing?" It sounds like something I would say because I forgot what its called!

It's a social media site for book lovers and allows us to share book collection, review books, maintain reading lists, and chat with users who have similar tastes in literature.

I'm not sure if I would use this site because I normally go onto Amazon.com and read up on the reviews, etc. before buying a book.

I did find the website a bit slow in loading (you remember how I absolutely hate slow things! I know, I need to develop more patience.)

However, I did find the site very user-friendly, it was easy to navigate through and find items. I would say its a good alternative for reviews as well as finding some new reads.....but why wouldn't we use our own calgarypubliclibrary.com website for new reads?

Ummm...hellooooo....am I the only dedicated librarian here?

Online Productivity Tools

Do you see free online tools like these eventually replacing expensive software like MS Office?

Did I hear the word FREE in there? ha ha ha, just kidding.  ;)

I'm all over this! What's better than finding free tools online that can help you do things faster, easier and quicker? Even better is the fact that I don't need to spend big $'s on something I would use once or twice and it also saves me time from going out to buy the product.

Anything that saves me time, money and gets the job done is the way to go. Of course these applications would eventually take over expensive software, why wouldn't it?

YAY to online tools!

You Tube - What's all the hype about?

A long time ago, when the whole You Tube hype hit everyone, I always wondered what's so great about it?

You Tube is a wealth of knowledge and entertainment! Its very user friendly and easy to find multiple videos on a subject you're interested in.

You Tube's not just all fun and games as everyone makes it out to be. I have found hard to find movies, music videos, silly videos, etc. - you name it, you'll probably find it on there. I've also found tutorials and step by step "how to's" - how great is that when you have no idea what you're doing and all you need to do it look it up and find a video from someone who does know what they're doing?!?!?!

Isn't it also great to know that there's someone else out there that doesn't know how to do something so they posted it on You Tube for us to learn the easy way? But of course we need to give credit to all those people out there who spend the time to post it online. Thank You!

What in the world is RSS?

Were you able to successfully setup your RSS feed? If not, where did you run into problems? If you were successful, does this make information-gathering more convenient for you?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.

I don't know about you, but I'm starting to get a little overwhelmed with all of these new login's and accounts!

Setting up an account is fairly straight forward, but now I'm not sure what I will do with this new account. I'm so busy as it is, if I start this now it will feel like a chore to me. LOL - I'm so honest eh? ha ha ha

On the bright side, I do think that RSS makes information gathering much easier and user friendly. Think of it like a one stop shop to find everything you need in one place.

I guess I will just have to find the time to make use this more.

I LOVE Google

Did I ever tell you that I absolutely LOVE Google? How many times do you hear someone say, "Just google it."

It's literally the best search engine alive and it shows since its so well known to everyone.

Not only do I love Google, but there are also a few other products I like as well, but I won't bore you all with all of them....I'll just stick to my favorite one.

GOOGLE EARTH
I never knew what Google Earth was until a few years ago when I had to use it for my other job. It was literally the coolest thing ever (I'm glad its becoming more well known). I built my house a few years ago and I was able to check on the progress of it without having to drive all they way down there. How cool is that?!?!?! I never imagined that someone could ever possibly capture the world like that. You can zoom and look up detailed streets and see if there was a car parked outside your house when they took the picture. Its awesome! A great way to pass your time - way better than the horrid world of Facebook. Yikes!

The only drawback that I can think of is that its not 100% current, but how could we possible expect it to be 100% current? The Earth is so big and I'm absolutely amazed at everything they have done so far. And of course their is always the entire FOIP issue (us Librarians know all about FOIP - go ahead, quiz us, LOL) regarding privacy, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I am constantly recommending quite a few of the Google products to those I know - Picasa is my second favorite.

I'm definitely not an information hoarder by any means.

Facebook

What do I really think of Facebook

To be honest, I don't believe in Facebook. Why in the world would anyone want to publicize everything on an online site? Why don't people just pick up the phone and see how their friends are doing? Its so unpersonal to do things that way.

Call me old fashioned if you want, but I question the security of Facebook. When signing up for an account, Facebook, for some unknown reason knew who my friends were - that is scary. I did not agree to release any personal information to them, nor did I agree for them to screen who my email contacts to find my friends.

I have always been anti-Facebook, but I finally signed up one day because my sister could not find the time in her busy schedule to send me pictures of my little niece. So I signed up....I was not impressed. I found that it was hard getting used to the site, but maybe I am just a little slow when it comes to Facebook. Who knows! It took me so long to find things that I felt like it WAS a waste of time.

I should do a poll....do people actually go on Facebook to communicate with their friends or do they use it to fill the time in their day when they have nothing to do? I'm sure most would say the latter.

Who has the time to go online anyways? I certainly don't and can't be bothered. If you want to see how I'm doing, please email me or call me - that is a personal way of communicating with someone you care about.
